010523HAO00046SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate passed a bill Monday to reduce gun violence statewide, which was proudly supported by State Senator Robert Peters.

“Too many people have died unnecessarily at the hands of someone with a firearm,” said Peters (D-Chicago). “We have seen this time and time again, and the least we can do is regulate the possession of the weapons of choice of mass shooters.”

SPRINGFIELD – State Senator Robert Peters is leading a measure that would allow principals and assistant principals in the city of Chicago to collectively bargain.

“For far too long, Chicago principals have not had a say in the work environment and procedures that affect them, as well as their students,” said Peters (D-Chicago). “Chicago principals have a voice when it comes to their working conditions, and their voice deserves to be heard and valued.”

CHICAGO — State Senator Robert Peters released the following statement in response to Kankakee County Circuit Court Judge Thomas W. Cunnington’s opinion on the pretrial release portions of the SAFE-T Act:

“Kankakee County Circuit Judge Thomas W. Cunnington issued his opinion on pretrial fairness, ruling that it was “unconstitutional.”

“I stand beside the decision to appeal to the Illinois Supreme Court, as so many of us have worked so hard for equity in the criminal justice system and will continue the fight for pretrial justice.

“When you make systemic, civil rights level changes, there are bound to be people who will do whatever to stop it. We’ve seen this before from the Voting Rights Act to Obamacare, and even the Governor's COVID-19 mitigations.

“We have fought to ensure that all Illinoisans are treated fairly in the criminal justice system and able to exercise their rights under the SAFE-T Act and the Illinois Constitution.

“The fight continues.

“Remember, you can always find facts at HB3653.org.”

CHICAGO – Following the death of his esteemed friend and colleague, State Senator Scott Bennett, State Senator Robert Peters released the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened to learn about Senator Bennett’s passing. It was just last week we were sitting next to each other and working on legislation together.

“More than a hard worker and state senator, he truly had a divine sense of humor. He was always making us laugh, and he was a pleasure to work with. He knew how to diffuse a tense negotiation with a perfectly timed joke or comment.

“My condolences are with wife his wife and children, and I know he will not be forgotten.”
