CHICAGO — State Senator Robert Peters (D-Chicago) released a statement following the release of bodycam footage from the tragic incident in Humboldt Park on March 21, which resulted in the death of a community member and an officer being hospitalized:
“The released body camera footage depicting the fatal shooting of Dexter Reed is profoundly disturbing. Whenever a life is lost, regardless of the circumstances, it is a tragedy that leaves behind deep pain and trauma for all involved. The inherent danger of any weapon, whether wielded by Dexter Reed or the police officer who was nearly killed, underscores the gravity of this incident.
“The repercussions of this tragedy extend far beyond the injured officer and the loss of a member of the community. The profound grief resulting from this fatal incident reverberates through families, friends and the entire community.
“The release of the body camera footage sheds light on the complexities of law enforcement encounters and shows the urgent need for transparency and cooperation. In order for there to be trust among communities and law enforcement, it is important that we are honest about how we feel when a routine traffic stop results in a life lost. Everyone involved in the aftermath of this incident must be forthright, sincere and held accountable for excessive actions.
“My heart goes out to Dexter Reed's family, and I offer my deepest condolences to the grieving community of Reed's family, friends and neighbors. Additionally, I extend my sincere wishes for the full recovery of the officer injured in this incident.
“I commend the Mayor’s office and COPA for their prompt response to this matter. As a whole, we must maintain our dedication to advocating for meaningful change to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.”
